Hey everyone, Christian from CertSmart Pathways.
I talk to small business owners, cafe managers, retail supervisors and hiring managers every week. Here’s what they actually care about when hiring someone straight out of school (or with very little experience):
Reliability & attitude > quals Can you show up on time, every time? Do you seem keen? That beats a fancy certificate any day.
Basic digital skills Can you send a proper email, join a Teams call, use Google Drive? If not, you’re out before the interview.
Willingness to learn They know you won’t know everything. They just want to see you’re proactive — doing a short course, volunteering, asking questions.
Clean online presence They Google you. No party pics or controversial stuff. A simple LinkedIn profile with a real photo helps a lot.
Good communication Polite messages, clear answers, no one-word replies. Practice this now.
That’s it. No one expects you to arrive fully trained. They expect you to be someone they can trust and teach.
